Union Gap, Washington — Town Lost the Yakima Name and Kept the Gap

Union Gap began as Yakima City, which makes the modern name a souvenir from one of Washington's stranger railroad relocations.

In the 1880s, Northern Pacific chose a depot site several miles north of the existing town. Businesses and residents followed the trains, creating North Yakima while the original settlement remained behind. For decades, two nearby communities carried versions of the Yakima name.

In 1918, the older town adopted Union Gap, borrowing from the narrow opening where the Yakima River passes between ridges. Roads, rail lines and the river still converge through that corridor, and warehouses, retail and highway infrastructure continue exploiting the geography.

The town lost “Yakima.” The gap turned out to be the more durable asset.
