Rimrock, Washington — Mountain Lake With a Job Downstream

Rimrock Lake sits high in the Naches River watershed behind Tieton Dam.

From a cabin or campsite, the reservoir looks like recreation: fishing, boating, forested slopes and basalt cliffs.

Its larger purpose is agricultural.

Rimrock is part of the Yakima Project's reservoir system, storing water that eventually supports farms and orchards far downstream in the Yakima Valley.

That infrastructure created a second community around the lake. Cabins, campgrounds and homes appeared beside water being held primarily for use somewhere else.

Rimrock therefore has two identities at once: mountain recreation destination and working component of a much larger irrigation system.

The view is local. Much of the water's job is not.
