Pomona, Washington — Roman Goddess in Yakima Orchard Country

Pomona sits north of Yakima in country historically shaped by irrigated fruit growing.

The name comes with unusually classical ambitions. Pomona was the Roman goddess associated with fruit trees and orchards—an almost comically appropriate reference for the Yakima Valley.

Irrigation transformed dry ground into productive agricultural land, and fruit became one of the region's defining industries.

Homes and rural roads spread among the orchards as Yakima expanded northward.

Some agricultural land has since given way to development, but the old naming choice still works.

Whoever picked Pomona reached all the way back to Rome for a word that essentially means: yes, we grow fruit here.
