Nile, Washington — Mountain Built a Dam Overnight

On October 11, 2009, the mountain above Nile rearranged the transportation map in a matter of minutes.

Millions of cubic yards of rock and earth collapsed across State Route 410 and the Naches River. The slide blocked the channel, backed water behind a natural dam and buried the highway beneath debris. Remarkably, no one was killed.

Nile had long existed as a rural mountain community shaped by forest, ranches, recreation and the Naches corridor. After the slide, engineers had to improvise transportation around a landscape that had just demonstrated who held the stronger negotiating position.

Roads negotiate with mountains. Mountains do not negotiate back.
