Granger, Washington — Dinosaurs Are Concrete; the Agriculture Is Real

Granger has dinosaurs, and the fact that none of them are fossils is part of the charm.

Beginning in the 1990s, the city adopted large concrete dinosaur sculptures as a civic theme. The creatures appeared in parks and public spaces through local promotion rather than paleontological discovery, a distinction that somehow makes the commitment more impressive.

Underneath the prehistoric joke is a modern agricultural city. Irrigated farms and food processing shape the lower Yakima Valley, while generations of Latino workers and families transformed Granger's population, businesses and institutions.

The dinosaurs give travelers a reason to remember the place. Agriculture gives the place a reason to exist.
