Byron, Washington — Small Name in an Intensively Farmed Valley

Byron lies in the lower Yakima Valley, where the green fields can make it easy to forget that central Washington is naturally dry.

Irrigation changed everything. Water diverted through the Yakima Basin turned arid ground into orchards, vineyards, hop yards and row crops, and a web of roads and rail lines grew around the resulting agricultural economy.

Byron remained one of the smaller settlements inside that productive landscape. It never acquired the municipal identity of Sunnyside, Grandview or Prosser, but homes persisted among the farms.

That scale is part of what makes the lower valley interesting. A place can be tiny while the agricultural system surrounding it is anything but. Around Byron, the community occupies only a few marks on the map; the working landscape stretches to the horizon.
