Walla Walla, Washington — Gold Built the Boom; Wheat Stayed for Dinner

Walla Walla was a regional meeting place long before the modern city.

The valley's streams, Blue Mountain routes and productive ground supported Indigenous communities and trade.

The nineteenth century brought fur traders, missionaries and profound conflict, including the 1847 killings at Waiilatpu after a devastating measles epidemic among Cayuse people and the warfare and dispossession that followed.

Then gold rushes in Idaho and northeastern Oregon turned Walla Walla into a supply center.

Miners needed food, tools, animals and whiskey.

The town sold all four.

Agriculture proved much more durable than gold.

Wheat spread across surrounding dryland country. Walla Walla Sweet Onions became famous enough to receive federal marketing protection.

Wine later supplied a new public identity as vineyards and tasting rooms multiplied.

The city also accumulated institutions such as Whitman College and the state penitentiary, giving it economic roles well beyond agriculture.

Walla Walla has reinvented itself several times without moving.

Gold created the rush.

Wheat built permanence.

Wine taught visitors to linger.
