Waitsburg, Washington — Mill Owner Put His Name on the Town

Sylvester M. Wait built a flour mill beside the Touchet River in 1865 and accidentally supplied the organizing idea for an entire town.

Surrounding wheat farmers suddenly had a local market. Stores, homes and civic institutions followed, while rail transportation later connected Waitsburg with Walla Walla and more distant grain markets.

Agricultural prosperity left an unusually intact collection of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century buildings, reminders of an era when even small farm centers expected banks, hotels and substantial public architecture.

Wait's original mill is gone, but the agricultural logic behind it remains visible in every direction. He found wheat country; the wheat built the town around him.
