Lowden, Washington — Wine Country Did Not Replace Wheat Country

Visitors driving west from Walla Walla can encounter a tasting room and a grain truck on the same rural road.

That is Lowden's modern agricultural story.

Dryland wheat shaped surrounding uplands for generations, while irrigated ground closer to the river supported other crops. Vineyards later added wine grapes to the mix, and wineries brought visitors into country previously traveled mostly for farming.

The new industry changed land values, traffic and public identity. It did not erase the older one.

Lowden remains an unincorporated working community where vineyards, wheat fields, homes and agricultural businesses occupy the same landscape. Calling it wine country is accurate. Calling it only wine country misses what was already there.
