Eureka, Washington — Town Platted on the Flat

Eureka sits northwest of Walla Walla in broad agricultural country known as Eureka Flat.

This is one of the small localities whose paper trail is unusually crisp. A post office opened under the Eureka name in 1889. Mrs. A. B. Blanchard formally platted the town on June 6, 1904, and the post office continued operating until 1964.

The town never grew into a major commercial center. Agriculture proved more durable than urban ambition, while better roads gradually pulled shopping and services toward larger communities.

Eureka nevertheless survived as an inhabited rural place rather than fading entirely into an old plat.

There is something satisfying about the chronology: first came the name, then the mail, then the official town plan. Population simply declined to cooperate with the grander possibilities.
