College Place, Washington — College Came First

College Place has one of Washington's more literal origin stories.

Seventh-day Adventists established Walla Walla College west of Walla Walla in 1892. Homes for faculty, rooms for students, churches, businesses and other institutions gathered around the school.

The college eventually became Walla Walla University. The city kept the older name that explains why it exists.

Adventist culture gave College Place a distinct identity even as development joined it physically with neighboring Walla Walla. Sabbath observance, education and health traditions all shaped community life.

Modern geography adds a little confusion: Walla Walla University is in College Place, while Whitman College is in Walla Walla.

Most towns attract a college after they exist. College Place accumulated around one.
