Wellpinit, Washington — Tribal Capital in the Present Tense

Wellpinit is the governmental center of the Spokane Tribe of Indians, and that contemporary role belongs at the beginning of its story rather than as an epilogue to nineteenth-century history.

The Spokane people's homeland once extended across a much larger inland region. Federal policy dramatically reduced that land base, and the Spokane Reservation was established in 1881. Wellpinit became the center of tribal government within that imposed geography.
