Springdale, Washington — Town at the Meeting of Farm and Forest

Springdale occupies a Stevens County valley where open agricultural ground and forested hills meet, giving the community more than one economic inheritance.

Hay, grain and livestock used the flatter land, while timber and sawmill work drew on the surrounding forests. Railroads once moved both kinds of products toward Spokane, and local stores, schools and services supported households spread across the wider district.

Those industries changed over time, but Springdale remained a practical center for rural residents. More recent housing has also spread into wooded country where wildfire adds a new concern to the old farm-and-forest boundary.
