Onion Creek, Washington — Far North, Even by Stevens County Standards

Onion Creek lies in northern Stevens County, in forest and ranch country approaching the Canadian border.

The creek valley offered water and workable ground for farms and homes, while timber occupied the surrounding hills. Distances are large enough that weather and road conditions have always mattered more here than they do in a compact town.

Colville and Northport provide the larger commercial centers, but neither is next door. That gave neighbors and local institutions more importance when winter travel was slower and less predictable.

Onion Creek never developed much of a downtown because the settlement pattern never required one.

It is a community measured in drainage, road miles and acreage—three units that make considerably more sense here than city blocks.
