Marcus, Washington — Town Moved Before the River Rose

Marcus had already survived mining cycles, railroad traffic and Columbia River commerce when Grand Coulee Dam presented a problem that could not be waited out: the townsite was going underwater.

Lake Roosevelt would cover the old settlement, so residents relocated buildings and community life to higher ground before the reservoir filled. The move preserved Marcus while severing it from streets and waterfront locations that had shaped the original town.

Modern Marcus is far smaller than the transportation center it once was, but the earlier version did not vanish in the ordinary sense of abandonment.

The old town is still geographically there. It is simply beneath the lake. Marcus survived because residents moved before the river did.
