Ford, Washington — Living Community on the Spokane Reservation

Ford is one of the distinct communities of the Spokane Indian Reservation.

That present-tense fact matters more than treating the place as a frontier relic.

The reservation was created by executive order in 1881, confining the Spokane people to a fraction of the territory their ancestors had used across the inland Northwest.

Families adapted to imposed boundaries while maintaining tribal government, institutions and community ties.

Ford developed within that reservation geography rather than around a conventional railroad or mining boom.

Roads connect homes with Wellpinit and tribal services across forested country above the Spokane and Columbia rivers.

Ford's story is not about a settlement that disappeared.

It is part of the continuing geography of the Spokane Tribe.
