Echo, Washington — Valley Apparently Answered Back

Echo lies north of Colville at the southern end of Echo Valley along Clugston Creek.

The name has one of the more satisfying origin stories among tiny eastern Washington communities: historical geographic accounts describe the valley as producing noticeable echoes. Someone heard the landscape answer and apparently decided that was good enough for a place-name.

The modern community is small, surrounded by forest, rural roads and scattered homes rather than storefronts. That modest scale makes the name even more memorable. Plenty of settlements were named for politicians, railroad officials or distant hometowns. Echo appears to have been named for something the valley itself did.

Apparently the valley made enough of an impression to name itself.
