Colville, Washington — Two Forts, One Missing L

There were two different Fort Colvilles, and history made the naming unnecessarily difficult.

The Hudson's Bay Company established Fort Colvile—with one L—near Kettle Falls in 1825.

The U.S. Army later established Fort Colville—with two Ls—near the modern city.

Different places. Different governments.

The city developed around the American military presence and later became the Stevens County seat, serving mining, timber and agricultural country across northeastern Washington.

The Army eventually left.

The older Hudson's Bay fort met a stranger fate.

Lake Roosevelt eventually rose over the old Hudson's Bay Company site near Kettle Falls.

So one Fort Colvile is underwater, the other survives as a historic site, and the City of Colville remains very much inhabited.

One extra L.

No excuse for mixing them up.
