Tiger, Washington — Store Outlived Most of the Town

Tiger once had a hotel, railroad depot, sawmill, school and enough businesses to suggest permanence.

Mining and timber supported the settlement along the Pend Oreille River corridor, while rail connected workers and products with communities farther north.

Then the economy contracted.

Most of Tiger disappeared.

One commercial building survived unusually well: the Tiger Store.

Preservation efforts turned it into a museum and visitor center rather than allowing it to vanish with the rest of the business district.

The modern locality remains lightly inhabited.

Its old store is more than a place containing artifacts.

It is one surviving room from the town that used to surround it.
