Dalkena, Washington — Mill Name That Stayed on the River

Dalkena grew along the Pend Oreille River because timber once made small river settlements economically useful. Local accounts connect the name to Dalton and Kennedy, figures associated with an early mill, and a post office and homes followed the work.

The first industrial arrangement did not last. Mills changed, transportation improved and Newport became the stronger regional center. What remained was not an abandoned townsite but an inhabited stretch of river country where homes, forest and roads inherited the old name.

Dalkena is a good reminder that an industry's departure and a community's disappearance are not the same event. The mill economy moved on. The name—and the neighborhood—stayed beside the river.
