Synarep, Washington — Name That Refuses to Blend In

Synarep is tucked into the dry interior of Okanogan County, a landscape of ranch ground, sage, broken hills and long distances between settlements.

The community has always been small. Mining routes, ranching and scattered homesteads produced dozens of names across this part of Washington, many of which vanished when the activity that created them disappeared.

Synarep did not quite vanish. A handful of homes still carry a name distinctive enough that it hardly needs a marketing campaign.

The tempting thing would be to invent a tidy story explaining where “Synarep” came from. The surviving record does not support one confidently enough, and the mystery is better than folklore presented as fact.

In a county crowded with dramatic geography, Synarep's most memorable landmark may simply be its own name.
