Oroville, Washington — Gold in the Name, Canada Down the Road

Oroville sits close enough to Canada that the international boundary is part of ordinary local geography rather than an abstract line on a national map.

U.S. 97 leaves town, follows Osoyoos Lake and reaches the border within a few miles. The lake itself lies in both countries, making water management international even though the shoreline continues without ceremony.

The town's name came from mining optimism—“oro” for gold—but irrigated agriculture proved more durable in the Okanogan Valley.

Oroville consequently lives with two kinds of lines: irrigation draws green ones across dry ground, while customs draws a legal one across the valley.
