Omak, Washington — Rodeo Promotion Became the Town's Hardest Argument

Omak developed as irrigation expanded agriculture in the northern Okanogan Valley.

During the Depression, local boosters wanted an event that would bring visitors and spending into town.

The Omak Stampede began in 1933.

A few years later organizers added the steep horse race now officially promoted as the Suicide Race.

The event became famous far beyond Okanogan County—and controversial.

Supporters, including participants with Indigenous ties, describe traditions of horsemanship and endurance.

Animal-welfare advocates have criticized the race's steep descent, river crossing and history of horse fatalities.

Those arguments are part of the modern event and should not be flattened into either tourism copy or outsider caricature.

Omak itself is larger than the Stampede.

It remains a regional center for agriculture, commerce and services in a huge rural county.

The rodeo began as promotion.

It became the thing the city is repeatedly asked to explain.
