Malott, Washington — Valley Community That Knows Fire Too Well

Malott sits in the Okanogan River valley between Okanogan and Brewster, surrounded by dry hills and irrigated agricultural ground.

The valley made settlement practical. Orchards and farms used irrigation, while roads and rail routes followed the same north-south corridor through the county.

Summer can turn that useful geography dangerous.

Wildfires have repeatedly swept through the Malott area, destroying homes and businesses and forcing evacuations. The 2014 Carlton Complex demonstrated how quickly fire can move when heat, wind, grass and brush align across north-central Washington.

Malott remains because the valley is still productive and livable. Irrigation supports agriculture; open ground supports homes and ranches.

In a bad fire year, the same dry openness that makes the landscape work can become the thing everyone watches.
