Azwell, Washington — Orchards on a Dry Bench Above the Columbia

Azwell sits beside the Columbia between Chelan and Pateros.

The river is enormous. The surrounding ground is dry.

That contradiction explains the community's orchard history.

Irrigation lifted and moved Columbia water onto benches where rainfall alone could not support intensive fruit production. Rows of trees transformed the slopes into a carefully engineered agricultural landscape.

U.S. 97 later tied orchards and homes to packing houses and service centers elsewhere along the river.

Azwell remained small, but the work around it is visible every growing season.

The green orchard rows are not evidence of a naturally wet valley. They are evidence that somebody figured out how to move the river uphill.
