Waukon, Washington — Name Between the Wheat Fields

Waukon names a working piece of Big Bend wheat country where community has always been spread across acreage rather than concentrated on a Main Street.

Farm families historically depended on nearby schools, postal stops, grain facilities and gathering places, creating social connections across miles of fields and rural roads.

Mechanized agriculture reduced the number of households needed to work the land, while improved transportation shifted more services toward larger centers. The farms and residents that remained continued using the Waukon name.
