Reardan, Washington — Wheat Country With a Wetland Counterpoint

Reardan sits in Lincoln County wheat country, but the fields do not get the landscape entirely to themselves.

Dryland farms dominate the open plateau while wetlands and seasonal ponds interrupt the grain. Those pockets of water provide habitat for migrating waterfowl and other birds, creating a wildlife corridor inside a landscape engineered primarily for agriculture.

Rail transportation once concentrated grain handling and local commerce in town. Farm consolidation and larger machinery later reduced the number of households needed across the surrounding acreage, but Reardan remained an incorporated center along U.S. 2.

The result is a community with two very different measures of productivity visible from the same road: grain in the fields and bird habitat wherever the water collects.
