Odessa, Washington — Migration History You Can Eat

Odessa's wheat country became home to families whose migration story crossed Germany, the Russian Empire and North America.

Many early settlers were Germans from Russia—German-speaking agricultural communities whose ancestors had moved east into Russia before later generations emigrated again. Their experience with dryland farming translated well to the Big Bend.

Rail transportation and wheat built the town's economy. Decades later, descendants turned cultural memory into Deutschesfest, filling Odessa with German-Russian food, music and traditions.
