Mondovi, Washington — Wisconsin Name in Washington Wheat Country

Mondovi sits in Lincoln County's agricultural interior, but its name appears to have traveled farther than most of its residents ever needed to.

The name is associated with settlers carrying an existing Midwestern place-name west, part of a familiar migration pattern as families moved into the Big Bend country. The new setting was different, but agriculture remained the organizing idea.

Wheat farms spread across the plateau, and railroads and rural roads tied those farms to grain markets. Mondovi served nearby households without ever growing into a major commercial center.

As farms became larger and travel easier, the population thinned. The imported name stayed put, an oddly durable little piece of Midwestern geography planted in Washington soil.
