Mohler, Washington — How Bigger Farms Changed a Rural Community

Mohler sits in Lincoln County's Big Bend country, surrounded by dryland wheat fields and the long roads required to cross them.

When farms were smaller and travel slower, rural communities carried more infrastructure of their own. Schools, mail, supplies and grain transportation could not all be concentrated in distant towns, and Mohler belonged to that closely spaced network.

Mechanization changed the population math. Larger equipment allowed fewer households to work more acreage, while trucks and paved roads made longer trips routine.

The wheat remained highly productive even as the settlement pattern thinned. Mohler preserves the human geography of an earlier agricultural scale inside the modern one.
