Davenport, Washington — Town That Took the Courthouse From Sprague

When Lincoln County was created in 1883, Sprague had the railroad, the population and the county seat.

Davenport wanted the last one.

After a devastating 1895 fire weakened Sprague, Davenport won an election to move county government west. Sprague challenged the result, and the fight reached the Washington Supreme Court. Davenport kept the seat and eventually built a courthouse substantial enough to suggest the argument was over.

The victory reflected a larger shift. Wheat farming was spreading across Lincoln County, transportation patterns were changing and Davenport was becoming an agricultural center in its own right.

The surrounding Columbia Plateau adds a much older layer: basalt flows underlie the region, while Ice Age floods carved coulees and scablands through nearby country.

But Davenport's defining drama was bureaucratic rather than geological. Sprague had the first courthouse. Davenport won the rematch.
