Creston, Washington — Wheat Fields Above a Hidden Columbia

Creston sits on the Columbia Plateau in Lincoln County, surrounded by dryland wheat country.

The Columbia River is not far away, but from the farm ground above it can feel like an entirely different landscape. Fields stretch across the plateau while the river occupies coulees and canyon country dramatically lower than town.

Rail transportation gave Creston's grain growers a practical route to distant markets, and elevators and agricultural businesses became the town's essential architecture.

Grand Coulee Dam later transformed the Columbia below into Lake Roosevelt, adding reservoir recreation to a region built around wheat.

Creston stayed small as farms became larger and more mechanized. The streets can be quiet while the countryside is working at industrial scale—a familiar eastern Washington trick.
