Almira, Washington — Town Rebuilt Its School

When fire destroyed Almira's school in October 2021, the community lost far more than classrooms.

In a small Lincoln County town surrounded by wheat country, the school served families across a broad rural district and functioned as one of the central pieces of civic infrastructure. Students had to relocate while residents and the district faced the expensive question of whether rebuilding was realistic.

They rebuilt. A new school opened in 2024.

Modern farming can keep surrounding acreage highly productive with far fewer residents than earlier generations required, making institutions such as the school disproportionately important. Almira's newest landmark exists because the community decided losing the old one was not the end of the argument.
