Wahkiacus, Washington — Where the River Road Meets the Road to Goldendale

Wahkiacus sits beside the Klickitat River at the junction of State Route 142 and the road climbing toward Goldendale.

That intersection is not arbitrary. The Klickitat cuts a natural corridor through steep country, while the route toward Goldendale climbs out of the canyon toward the open plateau above.

People have moved through the river corridor far longer than modern highways have existed. Today homes and rural properties cluster around a junction that still connects two very different Klickitat County landscapes.

Wahkiacus never needed a courthouse square. The intersection does the organizing.

Stand there with a map and the community makes immediate sense: one road follows the river, another heads for the uplands, and a small settlement occupies the place where travelers have to choose.
