Trout Lake, Washington — Volcano Made Ice Caves

Trout Lake sits south of Mount Adams in a valley where volcanic geology keeps producing contradictions.

Lava once flowed across the region. When the surface cooled while molten rock continued moving beneath it, hollow tubes remained.

Some preserve ice well into summer.

The result is underground space formed by volcanic heat that became famous for staying cold.

Above ground, Trout Lake developed around dairy farming, timber and agriculture on the relatively open valley floor.

Recreation later became increasingly important as climbers and hikers used the community as a gateway toward Mount Adams.

The mountain dominates the horizon.

Its lava left some of the coldest attractions underground.
