Goldendale, Washington — Observatory Came for an Eclipse

Goldendale acquired an observatory because astronomers needed somewhere to watch the sun disappear.

A University of Washington team brought equipment to the area for the total solar eclipse of February 26, 1979. Central Washington's dry climate and relatively clear skies made the site useful.

The telescope stayed.

Goldendale Observatory became a public astronomy center and eventually part of a state park, giving the Klickitat County seat an identity beyond ranching, agriculture and government.

The surrounding landscape has since accumulated other large-scale technology. Wind turbines occupy nearby ridges, while Columbia River hydropower lies to the south.

Most county seats advertise the courthouse.
