Cleveland, Washington — Carousel Outlasted Almost Everything Else

Cleveland's most memorable surviving institution is a machine whose entire purpose is to go in circles.

The Herschell-Spillman carousel associated with the Bickleton-Cleveland community came from Portland's Oaks amusement park and arrived locally during the 1920s. Generations of residents preserved its horses and machinery for community celebrations.

That survival says more about Cleveland than a catalog of vanished stores would. Rural commercial institutions can disappear when population and transportation patterns change. A carousel survives only because people repeatedly decide that maintaining it is worth the trouble.

Cleveland kept theirs moving. The persistence is the landmark.
