Centerville, Washington — When Being in the Middle Was a Business Model

Centerville's historical advantage was simple: it was close enough. In Klickitat County farm country, families scattered across wheat farms and ranches once needed schools, stores, mail and gathering places that did not require a long trip to Goldendale or the Columbia. A modest rural center could therefore matter to a surprisingly large district.

Cars and improved roads changed the value of distance. Farm consolidation reduced the number of households on the land, and more errands shifted toward larger communities. Centerville stayed inhabited because the agricultural district around it stayed active.

The town did not somehow fail to become a city. Transportation changed the size of the world around it. What used to be “far away” got closer.
