Blockhouse, Washington — Quiet Community With a Defensive Name

Blockhouse lies in the open country near Goldendale, where farms and ranches spread across the Klickitat County plateau.

The name sounds more combative than the modern locality. “Blockhouse” belongs to the vocabulary of nineteenth-century frontier defense, when fortified structures appeared amid violent conflict accompanying U.S. expansion into Indigenous homelands across the Northwest.

What is less clear is exactly which local structure or episode fixed the name here. The surviving record does not support turning one attractive possibility into certainty.
