Bickleton, Washington — Town Built Houses for Bluebirds

Bickleton decided decades ago that bluebirds deserved better housing, and residents began putting up nest boxes around the community.

The birds accepted the offer. Western and mountain bluebirds became common enough that Bickleton embraced the title “Bluebird Capital of the World,” turning habitat work into one of the town's most recognizable identities.

The setting adds two other unlikely companions. Wheat and ranching occupy the high Columbia Hills, while persistent wind eventually attracted commercial turbines to nearby ridges. The community's long-running rodeo keeps another piece of rural tradition visible.

Bluebirds, cattle and wind turbines should make an awkward civic portrait. In Bickleton, they somehow belong in the same frame.
