Thrall, Washington — What a Railroad Stop Once Meant to Farm Country

Thrall sits south of Ellensburg in the agricultural Kittitas Valley, a locality created when a railroad stop could reorganize the working map around it.

Before trucks and paved highways made long hauls routine, farmers needed nearby places to ship hay and livestock, receive supplies and connect with outside markets. Railroads therefore distributed economic activity among small stops that could matter greatly without ever becoming large towns.

Irrigation supported the surrounding farms while the station supplied transportation. As roads improved and freight shifted away from small rail stops, most of Thrall's commercial role faded.

The locality remains attached to inhabited farm country. Its value as a story is precisely that ordinariness: Thrall preserves the scale at which transportation once divided a valley into many small, useful places.
