Thorp, Washington — Fruit Stand Became Bigger Than the Landmark Needed to Be

Thorp began as a farm-and-mill community along the Yakima River west of Ellensburg.

Water supported agriculture, early mills processed local grain and timber, and the Northern Pacific connected the valley with larger markets. Thorp became a practical rural service point rather than a large town.

Then Interstate 90 changed the audience.

Thorp Fruit and Antique Mall grew beside the freeway into a roadside business wildly larger than the community around it, selling produce, food and antiques to people crossing central Washington.

There is more continuity there than first appears. The railroad once connected Thorp to travelers and markets beyond the valley; the freeway does the same thing with different machinery.

The trains helped create the town. The interstate gave it a fruit stand almost impossible to miss.
