Teanaway, Washington — Giant Subdivision That Mostly Didn't Happen

The Teanaway Valley has exactly the sort of Cascade scenery that attracts large private development.

For generations, timber, grazing and scattered rural settlement occupied the river valley north of Cle Elum.

Then development pressure intensified.

A huge tract of former timberland became the focus of years of debate over housing, water, recreation and habitat.

Washington ultimately acquired roughly 50,000 acres in 2013, creating the Teanaway Community Forest.

That decision redirected the valley's future.

Instead of thousands of additional private parcels, much of the landscape is now managed as public forest for recreation, forestry, grazing, fish and wildlife.

Private homes and working land remain interwoven with it.

Teanaway's defining modern event is unusual because it is largely something that did not happen.

The enormous subdivision stayed mostly on paper.
