Liberty, Washington — Gold Rush Never Entirely Ended

Gold drew prospectors into the Swauk Creek district during the 1870s.

They worked stream gravels and hard-rock deposits, leaving claims, cabins and mining equipment through the eastern Cascade foothills.

Most mining settlements eventually faced a clean historical break: the ore stopped paying, the miners left and the place became a ghost town or museum.

Liberty never quite reached that point.

A small inhabited community survived, and people still arrive hoping to find gold. Recreational prospecting and active claims keep mining from becoming purely historical.

Old buildings preserve the appearance of a nineteenth-century camp, but the pans and sluices are not all museum pieces.

Liberty's gold rush did not continue at boom scale.

It simply never received a formal ending.
