Ellensburg, Washington — Fire During the Capital Campaign

Ellensburg once had a serious chance to become Washington's state capital.

Then much of downtown burned.

Railroads, ranching and agriculture had made the Kittitas Valley city an important inland center. As Washington approached statehood in 1889, Ellensburg competed with Olympia and North Yakima for the permanent capital.

That summer, fire tore through the business district.

The city rebuilt rapidly in brick, creating much of the historic downtown visible today.

Voters ultimately kept the capital in Olympia. The fire did not single-handedly decide the contest, but its timing became part of Ellensburg's great historical near-miss.

The city soon acquired a different institution.

The state established the school that became Central Washington University in 1891.

Agriculture, education and Interstate 90 eventually mattered far more than the failed capital campaign.

Ellensburg rebuilt the downtown.

Olympia kept the dome.
