Easton, Washington — Mountain Town Beside Agricultural Water

Easton occupies a practical pause in the climb toward Snoqualmie Pass.

The Northern Pacific recognized the location early, establishing facilities in the upper Yakima River country while timber and railroad employment supported a community.

Lake Easton later became more than scenery.

Regulation and dam infrastructure made the water part of the Yakima Project, storing mountain runoff for agricultural use far downstream.

That role is easy to miss beside evergreen forest and Interstate 90.

Highway travel eventually replaced much of Easton's railroad-era importance, while recreation and mountain living supplied new reasons to stay.

Winter weather and pass traffic now shape ordinary life more than they do in lower Kittitas County.

Easton sits near the headwaters of an agricultural system whose farms are many miles away.
