West Pasco, Washington — Edge of the City Kept Moving

West Pasco is the history of a city boundary trying to keep up with its own growth.

Older Pasco concentrated closer to the railroad and Columbia. Farther west, irrigation had already made open ground productive before subdivisions, schools, commercial corridors and roads began spreading across former agricultural land.

Annexation did not always move at the same speed, leaving places where the functional city and the legal city differed. That makes West Pasco a distinctly modern community rather than a railroad or mining town inherited from another era.

Its history is visible in conversion: farm ground becomes suburb, and the edge keeps moving west.
