Pasco, Washington — Railroad Built the Town; the War Changed Who Could Live Where

Pasco began as a Northern Pacific railroad center in the 1880s.

The company named it after Cerro de Pasco, a mining city in Peru—an oddly international name for a new Washington rail town.

Rail yards, highways and the Columbia-Snake river system made Pasco a transportation hub.

World War II changed the human geography.

Hanford drew thousands of workers into the Tri-Cities, including African Americans who encountered segregation in housing and employment. Richland's federally managed community largely excluded Black residents, while east Pasco became the center of the region's African American community.

Families built businesses, churches and institutions under those restrictions and later challenged discrimination through civil-rights activism.

Agriculture brought another transformation as Latino workers and families became increasingly central to farming, food processing and civic life.

Modern Pasco is one of Washington's more diverse cities.

The railroad put it on the map. Wartime policy divided it. Generations of residents made something larger out of both.
