Mesa, Washington — Railroad Named the Place; Irrigation Made It Work

Mesa existed on the map long before the surrounding land could support the agriculture visible today.

Northern Pacific established a station in the 1880s, and the locality passed through names including Bluff Wells and Judson before Mesa stuck. Water remained the limiting factor.

Then the Columbia Basin Project changed the calculation. Irrigation reached the area after World War II, allowing farms to produce on a scale impossible with local rainfall and wells alone. New agricultural settlement followed, and Mesa incorporated in 1955.

The chronology is unusually tidy. The railroad created a place to stop. Federal water infrastructure created enough productive countryside around it to support a city.

Mesa's most important growth project did not run through town on tracks. It arrived through canals.
