Eltopia, Washington — “Hell to Pay” May Have Named the Town

Eltopia's naming story is almost too good.

Local tradition says Northern Pacific workers watched a storm damage railroad construction in the 1880s and someone remarked that there would be “hell to pay.”

Hell-to-pay became Eltopia—at least in the story residents kept.

The exact linguistic journey is difficult to prove.

The town's practical origins are clearer. Rail service connected cattle, wheat and orchard country with outside markets, and a townsite was platted in 1902.

Eltopia remained unincorporated while irrigation later transformed agriculture across Franklin County.

Whether the name really began with a washed-out railroad grade is uncertain.

The story has lasted much longer than the repair job did.
